How I 'condensed' Portmeirion..
Welcome to this, my first blog following the design and construction of my 'condensed' version of the Campanile or Bell Tower at...
Creating a scale model of Portmeirion
Welcome to the home of one man's quest to build his own village of Portmeirion, one building at a time.
No not a real 1:1 scale version but the next best thing – in 1:82nd scale.
Starting first as a one off homage to my favourite 60’s TV series ‘The Prisoner’, back in 1994 I decided to scratch build a small scale replica of the character Number 6’s cottage.
However, bringing up a family and building a busy career in Advertising didn’t leave time for me to pursue an interest by Portmeirion’s management in creating a model of the whole village for planned display in the Green Dome.
The dream of one day building my own scale version of Portmeirion lay dormant until a day visit in 2012 re-ignited the plan and as Sir Clough Williams-Ellis’ scale drawings of the Bell Tower had already been published I decided that this was my next model making project.
The tower was to take over 3 ½ years to complete and unlike the original ‘Number 6 Cottage’ model I decided to record the build process.
As everything is hand made and hand painted it gives the work my own individual style and this coupled with my foundational desire to do justice to Sir Clough's magnum opus hopefully gives you, the viewer a little of that experience of ‘being there’.
Future plans
With Number six’ cottage the starting point and it being a part of the Battery Square assembly of buildings it seemed only natural to complete
The Bell Tower next.
Now that this is complete work is now underway on the construction of the next phase – Priors Lodgings/Battery Square/Pilot.
If however you like the finished product but can’t or won’t commit to your own model making project I am open to private commissions, please drop me an email with your queries and contact details for more information.
